Hey Lisa! We are tweaking a new recipe as we speak, and our last bucket of the old Nova is on the floor in Watertown right now. I’ve seen some good results with it come out of the most recent glaze kilns. I would still air on the side of caution and extend your dip time / do an additional dip for a fully consistent gloss

Torches are OK, just be mindful of the wooden furniture around you and be careful not to place the hot metal tip on anything. I have no personal experience with either, but I also see people mostly using the larger propane torches.

Hey there Laura! We haven’t had any kiln misfirings or other complaints of underfired work as of late, so I don’t think it is a kiln issue. Another potential would be if the piece had a hairline crack in it that wasn’t evident until glazing. Conversely, holding a piece with tongs tightly while glazing can cause a hairline crack. The last potential could be if the piece was just never actually bisqued. If you grabbed it from the bisque pick up carts, chances are it has been bisqued. It isn’t unheard of though that a student accidentally glazes a greenware piece thinking it was bisqued!

This was my initial suspicion too, but I checked with the weekend crew, and they confirmed they didn’t come out of that kiln! This was an added layer of confusion because it would’ve made a lot more sense if they did! I hope the refire can seal them up and get them vitrified!

Hey Sarah! No misfires thankfully! That said, this is odd! I haven’t been in to see any of the results myself and won’t until Monday, but I’ve heard most other stuff in the kiln is looking normal and is vitrified! Unless there is a cold spot in the kiln that we are not aware of, this is a mystery! We know which kiln the pieces were in however, and will include cone packs in the next firing to see if we can sleuth out a cold spot. I’m sorry your pierces were affected! Although not your ideal results, they are lovely! Almost soda fired in appearance

Hey David! We do not currently permit using commercial glazes over/under our studio dipping glazes. We cannot attest to their stability once you combine them. You could use one on the interior and another on the exterior, but they cannot be layered!

I believe it’s one of the Amaco Cosmos glazes. Perhaps Dark Star!
